Best Midsize SUVs in UAE 2021-22: Price, Specifications, Mileage, Colors, Images
If there is one type of car that you will spot often in the United Arab Emirates, it is the kind that rides high and give the occupants a feeling of being in something bigger than they are actually in. In short, we are talking about midsize SUVs. As the term suggests, these SUVs are not large enough to fall into the category of “full-size”, but they are big enough to march beyond the known territory of compact/small SUVs. Where buyers want something bigger and nicer, the midsize SUV clamors on for sheer life in some markets.
Like to buy used cars?
However, the UAE is not one of those markets. Here, the midsize SUV has seen a meteoric rise in its popularity and following success. The sheer number of folks that want one of these vehicles in this region is simply astounding, with more joining the ranks. One would be excused for assuming that the midsize SUV is eating into the space that was initially reserved for large hatchbacks and family sedans. Today, Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) dominate the entire automotive market space like never before – buyers cannot get enough of them.

Of course, this does not indicate an absence of competition in the segment. In fact, there is so much rivalry here, it can be hard to actually find a car that you can narrow-down upon and pick. Then there are midsize crossovers and midsize SUVs – both being pretty different to each other. That is the reason Cars24 decided that a comprehensive guide on the best midsize SUVs in the UAE might come in handy for those of you who are looking for one. And in case you are looking for used cars in Dubai or decently-priced second-hand cars in Sharjah, Cars24 is the right place to find one of those as well.

Mitsubishi Montero Sport
Introduced at some point back in the mid-1990s, the Montero Sport (also known as the Pajero Sport) is the Japanese brand’s mighty sword in the heavily-fought midsize SUV segment in the UAE. It has always been based on the Triton/L200 pickup truck platform, which makes it a proper ladder-frame SUV. In 2015, Mitsubishi introduced the third-generation model of the Montero Sport – it featured an all-new design, technology and drivetrain.
Come mid-2019, Mitsubishi updated the Montero Sport yet again. The all-new avatar that is on sale in the UAE now is all prepped to meet any rivals that come its way. Sold by Al Habtoor Motors from AED 79,900, the Mitsubishi Montero Sport is one of the best-selling SUVs in its segment in the region. If you want an even better offer, you can shop on Cars24 for used Mitsubishi cars in Dubai for even less money.
Exterior
The latest generation of the Mitsubishi Montero Sport always had a pretty aggressive and ‘sporty’ face. It came with the brand’s iconic “Dynamic Shield” main grille, which projected a feeling of strength, confidence and scale. Today as well, the outgoing Montero Sport displays the kind of visual confidence that encourages you to get up close to it. This SUV has an impressive front end, there is no doubt on that. If you like how a vehicle looks like when you stare at it from the front end, then the new Montero Sport surely lives up to its hype.
In its latest facelift, the Mitsubishi Montero Sport gained even more ferocity and liveliness. The front fascia now comes with new LED headlamps and DRLs, while the twin-slatted grille is all new as well. As for the rest of the car, the designers at Mitsubishi have not made any huge changes, as the side profile remains mostly the same- the 18-inch alloy wheels are of a new design, though. As for the rear of the Montero Sport, it boasts vertically-arranged tail lamps that now feature redesigned but stylish LED running elements.
The back of the Montero Sport looks pretty similar to the model it replaces. It comes with a sporty-looking roof spoiler, a thick chrome bar on the tailgate, and a chunky rear bumper with a faux skid plate/diffuser. Overall, the Mitsubishi Montero Sport certainly has an eye-catching appearance, though not everyone will be too fond of its rather controversial rear-end styling. In the UAE, the new Montero Sport is offered with 8 exterior colors. The list of options includes White Diamond, Graphite Gray Metallic, Sterling Silver Metallic, Deep Bronze Metallic, Medium Red Mica, Deep Blue Mica etc.
In terms of its exterior dimensions, the Mitsubishi Montero Sport is definitely not a petite SUV. It spans 4,825mm in overall length, 1,815mm in width, and 1,835mm tall at the roof. Then there is its wheelbase of 2,800mm, and a boot capacity of just over 130 liters (with the third row in place). Even today, the Montero Sport remains one of the most striking-looking SUVs in its segment.
Interior
The beige-black dual-tone interior of the Montero Sport looks fairly luxurious and is pretty accommodating as well. There are three rows of seats, with the last one feeling decent, albeit requiring one to sit in a knees-up position. This can get tiring over a long journey, especially if you are someone of a larger stature. Meanwhile, the rest of the seats are comfortable and spacious enough even if you are on the taller side.
Mitsubishi has covered many of the touchpoints with soft leather, even though they might not always feel of the highest quality. Having said that, this solution is still better than knocking your elbow on some hard plastics. For the most part, this interior has enough good materials that will make you feel comfortable enough without having to spend way too much money on a luxury brand. The cabin remains fairly quiet at lower speeds, though the noise levels do go up considerably at highway speeds.
In terms of its other interior appointments, the Mitsubishi Montero Sport comes equipped with keyless entry with push-button start, a power sunroof, electrically controlled wing mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control with rear blower control, powered front seats, a customizable 8-inch color LCD driver’s display, shift paddles, an 8-inch touchscreen center display with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, and a power-operated tailgate.
Performance and other features
In the UAE, the Mitsubishi Montero Sport comes with safety features such as 7 airbags, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, an electronic parking brake with Brake Auto Hold, Multi Around Monitor with front & rear parking sensors, Active Stability & traction Control, Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control, adaptive cruise control, Forward Collision Mitigation system with forward emergency braking, Blind Spot Warning, Lane Change Assist, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
The Montero Sport can be had with the Japanese brand’s highly-acclaimed Super Select II four-wheel-drive system. Controlled by a driver-selectable rotary knob in the cabin, this system allows for rear-wheel-drive only or proper four-wheel-drive operation. Not to mention, there is also dedicated off-road drive modes such as Gravel, Mud/Snow, Sand or Rock and a rear differential lock. Furthermore, the Montero Sport boasts an approach angle of 30 degrees, a ramp breakover angle of 23.1 degrees, and a departure angle of 24.6 degrees.
Powering the Montero Sport is Mitsubishi’s old but reliable 3.0-liter MIVEC V6 petrol engine. This unit produces 215hp and 285Nm of maximum torque, and comes mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard. At best, this SUV can go from 0 to 100 kmph in just over 9.5 seconds, while its top speed is just north of 180 kmph. In terms of its fuel economy, the Mitsubishi Montero Sport averages around 9.5 kmpl or 10.5 L/100 km.

Hyundai Santa Fe
In the world of urban midsize SUVs, the Hyundai Santa Fe is a longstanding name. It has been on sale globally since the early-2000s, though the latest fourth-generation model arrived in 2018, with Hyundai again updating the Santa Fe in 2020. The Korean auto major has focused much of its efforts on the SUV’s styling, onboard features and comfort, while also adding some new-age technologies to the mix.
The all-new Hyundai Santa Fe is on sale in the UAE by Juma Al Majid, with prices starting from AED 94,300 for the base model. On the other hand, Cars24 has a great collection of well-priced second-hand cars for sale in Sharjah.
Exterior
As mentioned before, one of the biggest draws of the all-new Hyundai Santa Fe is its styling. The exterior design of the latest-gen Santa Fe looks quite flashy and sharp – it is bold and sporty at the same time. Since it is built on Hyundai’s new N3 platform, this Santa Fe is slightly bigger than its predecessor. With the facelift, the front fascia now sports revised LED lights and a redesigned grille that add to this SUV’s contemporary yet upmarket appearance.
The facelift also brings with it a new set of alloy wheels, though the side profile has not been altered much beyond that. Still, it looks new and presentable with its several cuts and sharp creases. At the rear, the facelift tacks on a full width LED light bar for that technical elegance that many customers have come to love these days. Meanwhile, the angular LED tail lamps look sleek and well designed. Lastly, there is a roof spoiler, a power-operated tailgate, and a decorative plastic trim at the base of the rear bumper.
The all-new Hyundai Santa Fe is available in 9 different exterior colors in the UAE, which includes Magnetic Forest, Typhoon Silver, Glacier White, Taiga Brown, Phantom Black, and Lava Orange among others. Needless to say, this can be quite a striking-looking SUV if optioned well. As for its exterior dimensions, the all-new Santa Fe measures in at 4,785mm in length, 1,900mm in width, and 1,710mm in overall height. In its new avatar, the Hyundai Santa Fe has a maximum cargo capacity of 782 liters (with the third row folded).
Interior
The interior of the all-new Hyundai Santa Fe has been designed to look modern yet contemporarily pleasing to the eye. Moreover, the cabin can be upholstered in either a standard mono-tone layout or a fancier dual-tone setup. Hyundai’s new design language for the interior means that you will feel a sense of luxury in here, something that the previous-gen car couldn’t boast about. The play of different switches, textures and upholstery makes for an interesting experience.
The all-new Santa Fe’s interior makes good use of soft-touch materials in key areas whilst also integrating comfortable, leather-upholstered seats. And with space for up to 7 occupants, this new model would be a good fit for the family. Even more important is the fact that there is enough room for passengers in all rows, albeit not as generous in the third row. Hyundai has also improved upon the quality of materials, while a panoramic sunroof and a digital driver’s display add to the overall ambience.
Speaking of which, the all-new Hyundai Santa Fe comes with niceties such as full LED headlamps, power-operated front seats with heating & cooling, dual-zone automatic climate control, power-folding rear seats, a wireless phone charger, a 12.3-inch gauge cluster & 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a ‘smart’ tailgate, and a high-end audio system by Krell. Hyundai has indeed loaded this new model of the Santa Fe with equipment.
Performance and other features
Just as important are the all-new Hyundai Santa Fe’s list of safety features. Some of its most noteworthy ones include Driver Attention Warning, Rear Occupant Alert, a head-up display, Surround View Monitor, Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Following Assist, and a navigation-based cruise control system with Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist. The Santa Fe also gets Blind-Spot View Monitor with Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Safe Exit Assist, and Highway Driving Assist.
The entry-level variant of the Hyundai Santa Fe in the UAE comes powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine. This naturally-aspirated four-popper produces 178hp and 232Nm of peak torque and comes mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission as standard, which spins the front wheels. If launched, this 1.7-ton SUV will go from 0 to 100 kmph in just over 10 seconds, eventually topping out at 195 kmph. As for its fuel consumption, the all-new Hyundai Santa Fe should be able to do about 11.1 kmpl or 9 L/100 km.

Kia Sorento
Based on the exact same platform as the all-new Hyundai Santa Fe, the latest iteration of the Kia Sorento came about in the later half of 2020. The Sorento has seen dependable success in the UAE, with buyers appreciating the design and features the SUV has to offer. In its latest form, the Kia Sorento starts from AED 103,000, making it slightly more expensive than some of its rivals. However, if you are looking for something more affordable, you will be thrilled to know that Cars24 has a growing list of certified used cars for sale in Abu Dhabi and other emirates.
While Kia has jacked up the price of the Sorento, it has also added tons of modern features and upped the comfort quotient. The Sorento is still a 7-seater SUV, but one which can now go head-to-head with its equally modern competitors with very little to worry about. In a market this competitive, every little margin counts. And while this bold new Sorento has a long way to go, it will likely find many takers in the region.
Exterior
It is clear from the get-go that the exterior design of the all-new Kia Sorento has plenty of similarities with some of its smaller siblings, i.e., Seltos and Sonet. Having said that, since the Sorento is much larger than those two, all of its exterior features are equally large too. At the front of the new Sorento, we have angular but flush LED headlamps with a distinctive three-beam design. Along with stylish LED turn indicators, this fascia also sports an all-black grille with a thin chrome upper band. The front bumper has been redesigned with a more purposeful look, while also integrating a set of LED fog lamps.
The rather interesting looking side profile of the new Sorento features new and well-styled 19-inch alloy wheels, larger wheel arches, and a thoroughly revised side styling overall. At the back of the new Sorento, there are all-new LED tail lamps with two individual segments, plus a sporty roof spoiler and a neatly-carved bumper with some fake vents and exhaust surrounds. Generally speaking, while the Sorento’s refreshed design may not be to everyone’s taste, it certainly does not look boring.
Over the years, the Sorento has grown in size, with this new model being a touch larger as well. It drives in at 4,810mm in length, 1,900mm in width, 1,700mm in height, and boasts a wheelbase of 2,815mm. As for its boot capacity, the Sorento can hold up to 357 liters of luggage with all three rows in place. In the UAE, the all-new Kia Sorento is available in 10 different exterior colors. The options include shades like Steel Gray, Silky Silver, Essence Brown, Aurora Black Pearl, Gravity Blue, and Snow White Pearl among others.
Interior
Along with its exterior, Kia has also updated the interior of the all-new Sorento. It now looks refreshingly modern and well-finished. As expected from a modern-day Kia product, the cabin features several high-quality plastics and squidgy materials to elevate the feeling of luxuriousness and class. There are even mood lighting strips, along with 3D textures plus surface effects and stitched leatherette for that contemporary touch. The seats feel great, while the piano black and metallic accents add to the upscale feeling of the Sorento’s interior.
The space inside is pretty good, with individual blower controls available for all rows. Moreover, the cabin remains fairly quiet even when you are cruising on the highway. While the Sorento has been a nice riding SUV, with this generation, Kia has engineered it in a way where it feels more natural in the way it cocoons the occupants as well as a car in this price range can. Moving on, Kia has equipped this generation of the Sorento with some of the best technologies that it has to offer.
Leading the features list on the all-new Sorento are tech such as 19-inch alloy wheels, automatic projector LED headlights, automatic windshield wipers, keyless entry with push-button start, a panoramic sunroof, 64-color LED mood lighting, ventilated & heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, paddle shifters, a gesture-controlled tailgate, a 12-speaker premium sound system, a wireless charging pad, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and a 10.25-inch touch-infotainment screen with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay.
Performance and other features
To ensure your protection, Kia has fitted the all-new Sorento with some of its most advanced passive & active safety features. The entourage includes kit such as Smart Cruise Control with Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind-Spot View Monitor, Surround View Monitor, drive modes with Multi-Terrain Control, and an electronic parking brake with Auto Hold. Of course, the Sorento also packs in 6 airbags, Hill-start Assist Control, Vehicle Stability Management with Electronic Stability Control, and all-around parking sensors.
The all-new Kia Sorento is offered to UAE customers with two engine options. The base variant of the Sorento comes equipped with a traditional 2.5-liter four-banger petrol motor that churns out 178hp and 232Nm of torque. However, there is also a more powerful 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine that is good for 268hp and 331Nm of maximum shove. Irrespective, only the larger motor comes mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox in the UAE, while the smaller unit has to make do with a 6-speed transmission. The latter obviously performs better – claiming a 0 to 100 kmph time of 8.7 seconds and a top whack of 210 kmph. On the other hand, on the fuel efficiency front, the smaller four-cylinder mill clearly does better – claiming 11.1 kmpl or 9 L/100 km. Meanwhile, the V6 model can return around 9.6 kmpl or 10.4 L/100 km.

Toyota Fortuner
The Toyota Fortuner is one of those SUVs that will sell in the UAE no matter what. Its fame and success are the result of its standing in the market as one of the most sought-after and reliable midsize SUVs. The Fortuner has been around since the mid-2000s and remained a leader on Toyota’s sales board ever since. Even though the outgoing second-generation was introduced back in 2015, the Fortuner has gone through several facelifts thereafter – the current one making its debut only in 2020.
If you want a brand-new Toyota Fortuner in the UAE, then you should know that the Fortuner starts from AED 120,000. Overall, there are three trim levels of the Fortuner in the region, though you have more (cheaper) options. This comes in the form of Cars24 and its extensive listing of used Toyota cars in Dubai, while there are also second-hand cars for sale in Ajman. Either way, the Fortuner is one of those cars that will not be a terrible buy.
Exterior
When it comes to its exterior styling, the latest iteration of the Toyota Fortuner is not that much different in its shape when compared to its predecessor. However, the Japanese auto giant has done its bit to tweak this SUV’s exterior, enough to distinguish it from its older self. The changes can be noticed up front, where you will now see a new and more muscular grille that is flanked by full LED headlamps with sleeker internals. Furthermore, there is a more chiseled yet sportier bumper at the front too.
As you move along the sides, you will notice that there is little to no change here. Anyway, the 17-inch alloy wheels with their thick tires and extended fenders give this area a very “SUV-like” demeanor. As for the rear of the new Fortuner, the only changes here come in the form of new LED tail lamps and a slightly redesigned roof spoiler and chrome bar on the tailgate. Also, the rear bumper has been restyled a bit as well. Despite its age, the Fortuner still deserves credit for not shedding its true-blue 4x4 persona.
The new Toyota Fortuner comes in multiple different exterior colors – there is White Pearl Crystal Shine, Silver Metallic, Black Metallic, Gray Metallic, and Attitude Black Mica. When it comes to its exterior dimensions, the Fortuner comes in at 4,795mm in length, 1,855mm in width, and 1,835mm in overall height. The SUV has a wheelbase that spans 2,750mm and a boot volume of just under 350 liters. While it no longer looks as fresh as it used to when it first came out, the Toyota Fortuner is still a pretty cool looking SUV within its segment.
Interior
When compared to its previous iteration, the outgoing Toyota Fortuner’s interior is not all that new. However, having said that, the Japanese auto giant has done a few things to up the quality quotient of this cabin. For instance, the latest model of the Fortuner gets a bigger and better display for its infotainment system, which comes in the form of an 8-inch touchscreen head unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This is supplemented by a “Optitron Meter” for the driver, plus a leather-clad multifunction steering wheel, and capacious seats that are both supportive and fairly comfortable.
On top of all this, Toyota has (kind of) improved the quality of some of the materials in this cabin. Of course, the moment you start touching and scratching most of it, you will realize that this is not a luxury SUV. However, given the space it operates in, the Fortuner is anything but being criticized by those who buy it. As for space, the interior of the new Fortuner is not bare-bones at all, though it is not chock-full of the latest & greatest that Toyota has to offer either. Toyota’s build quality has never been in question, and that remains true to this day as well. On a side note, do note climb into this SUV hoping to feel all luxurious or Lexusy.
As expected, the features list on the new Toyota Fortuner is not as exhaustive as you might have hoped for. However, it gets most of the essentials. Some of the most noteworthy of these include 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry with auto-leveling LED headlamps, a powered tailgate, push-button start, power operated and ventilated front seats, automatic dual-zone climate control with rear vents, paddle shifters, cruise control, leather upholstery, a cooled glovebox, and a 6-speaker audio system.
Performance and other features
In the UAE, all new Toyota Fortuners come with a 6-speed automatic gearbox. However, engine options include a base 2.7-liter four-popper that puts out 164hp and 244Nm of maximum torque. For those that want more oomph under the hood, there is the 4.0-liter six-cylinder motor that churns out a better-feeling 235hp and 375Nm of pulling force. In this case, the SUV gets full-time four-wheel-drive system as default. And if you want the best performance, go for the Fortuner with the V6 engine.
If you do, you might be able to go from 0 to 100 kmph in just over 12 seconds. Meanwhile, the much more enthusiastic six-cylinder engine means that the acceleration in this case results in a 0 to 100 kmph time of around 9 seconds. In terms of its top speed, the new Toyota Fortuner can hit 175 kmph (for the four-cylinder model) and just north of 185 kmph for the V6 variant. Overall, one could say that this SUV is not exactly brisk on its feet. As for its fuel consumption, the Toyota Fortuner goes through around 10.4 kmpl or 9.6 L/100 km for the four-cylinder, and approximately 9.6 kmpl or 10.4 L/100 km for the six-cylinder.
When it comes to the new Toyota Fortuner, safety has definitely not been ignored. In this case, it gets protective measures such as 7 airbags, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control with Traction Control, Tire Pressure Warning System, front and rear parking sensors, ISOFIX anchor points, and a rearview parking camera. One could say that the new Fortuner is a pretty safe SUV.

Mazda CX-9
Mazda has come a long way since making its mark in the world of automobiles. And when it comes to its SUV line-up, the CX9 is its largest and most fragrant model in the market. Introduced back in late-2006, the Mazda CX-9, the outgoing model is based on the slightly more exciting CX-8. Being a family-centric SUV, the CX-9 is the Japanese brand’s flagship model in its SUV range. Currently in its second generation, the CX-9 is a well-built, neat-looking, comfortable, and a decently-powered family SUV.
An all-new Mazda CX-9 in the UAE is usually retailed by Galadari Automobiles in Dubai, with prices starting from around AED 125,000. Of course, not all of us want a car that goes beyond the AED 100,000 price point. That is where Cars24 comes in, with its growing collection of second-hand cars for sale in Ajman and other emirates. You could say that, given the cars on this list, the Mazda CX-9 is really one of the best models overall. To know why so, check out its key highlights down below.
Exterior
Despite being introduced back in 2016, the Mazda CX-9 has not changed that much when it comes to its exterior design. Having said that, this is one of those SUVs that really is good where it is at in the market. And it is not even like it is ugly – one of its key aspects is its exterior styling. Staring at it from the front-end, you will notice that Mazda’s “tiger nose” design really does work its charm here. The massive front grille gets its share of chrome, while it is flanked sleek LED headlamps - underneath all that is a sculpted bumper which also integrates some chrome stylistic treatment and LED fog lamps.
Along the sides, you have 18-inch machine-finished alloy wheels plus courtesy lamps to make you feel welcome. Meanwhile, the flared wheel arches are muscular enough, and the contoured lines along the body look fairly decent. Adding to the whole exterior profile of the Mazda CX-9 are dual exhaust pipes with chrome finishings, a rear spoiler, and a thin chrome strip on the tailgate.
While there are 5 trim levels of the CX-9 available, these are further encompassed by 7 exterior colors. Some of these shades include Machine Grey, Soul Red Crystal Metallic, Snowflake White Pearl Mica, Sonic Silver, Titanium Flash, Deep Crystal Blue, and Jet Black. When it comes to its size, the Mazda CX-9 measures in at 5,075mm in overall length, 1,969mm in width, 1,716mm at the roof, and has a wheelbase of 2,930mm. Meanwhile, the CX-9 can hold at least 407 liters of luggage in its boot, and that is with the rear seats in their upright position. Despite it being a little older when compared to some of its contemporaries, the Mazda CX-9’s styling still looks and feels quite modern.
Interior
The interior of the Mazda CX-9 is as car-like as it gets. And while you are perched higher than in a regular sedan, the CX-9 driver sits nowhere near as high as in a Montero Sport, for example. On the other hand, the quality of materials in this cabin is definitely more superior to that found in the latter, with the dashboard and most of the controls being placed much lower than in a proper SUV. This also means that you get a great view outside, though the long snout and the sheer length of the CX-9 can make it tricky to maneuver and park in small spaces.
Mazda has installed some high-grade touchpoints in the CX-9’s cabin, though the windows are not particularly big. Depending on whom you ask, this can make you feel either a touch hemmed-in or well-cocooned. In general, the seats are supportive and comfy enough, while getting into the rear-most bench is not too much of a task. Having said that, the third row is not as spacious as one might think, given how large this SUV looks from the outside. Then again, this is pretty much the case with almost all midsize, three-row SUVs in the market.
The Japanese automaker has done a credible job in keeping the cabin of the CX-9 fairly composed when it comes to its NVH levels. Even at triple-digit speeds, the sound levels inside never get too intrusive, which is quite impressive. However, the small sunroof doesn’t do this interior much justice as its aperture is pretty small. The Mazda CX-9 does come loaded with several modern-day amenities, which includes the likes of a powered tailgate, adaptive LED headlights, Nappa leather seats with power & memory function for the front ones (plus ventilation function), ambient lighting, two-zone automatic climate control, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, and a 9-inch touch-infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Performance and other features
The powertrain that is responsible for moving this 1.9-ton SUV comes in the form of a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that spins all four wheels via a 6-speed automatic gearbox. While this motor only pushes out a maximum of 227hp, the unit sure impresses with its peak torque figure of 420Nm. Given its relatively light curb weight, the Mazda CX-9 can get from naught to 100 kmph in approximately 8.5 seconds and make it to a top speed of 210 kmph. And when it comes to its average fuel consumption, the CX-9 manages to achieve around 11.6 kmpl or 8.6 L/100 km.
Backing up its features list is adaptive cruise control, 360-degree cameras, front and rear parking sensors, a head-up display, Dynamic Stability Control with Roll Stability Control, Traction Control, ABS with EBD, and 6 airbags. Furthermore, the CX-9 also comes equipped with Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control Plus technology and Offroad Traction Assist, along with Driver Attention Alert, Distance Recognition Support System, Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and there is also Smart Brake Support with Pedestrian Detection and Collision Mitigation. Even though its overall design might be getting relatively dated, the Mazda CX-9’s safety features are nothing to scoff at.

Chevrolet Traverse
Coming in as the only American contender on this list, the Chevrolet Traverse has been around since the mid-2000s, though the latest iteration only came into being in mid-2017. The second generation of the Traverse is a lot sleeker and more modern-looking than the older model, while also being equipped with better technology and improved interiors. It rides on General Motors’s C1 platform, bringing it in line with the brand’s newer car models.
The new Chevrolet Traverse is priced from AED 127,600, and is retailed by either Al Ghandi Auto or Bin Hamoodah Auto in the United Arab Emirates. On the other hand, if you are on the hunt for some affordable four wheelers, then Cars24 has you covered, with plenty of well-priced second-hand cars in Ras Al Khaimah that can be yours for much less than 127,000 dirhams. Having said that, this new Traverse is a pretty neat family SUV.
Exterior
Placed right next to its predecessor, the new Traverse will seem a touch longer, especially when you compare the wheelbase of the two models – 3,021mm vs 3,071mm. Visually as well, the new Traverse comes across as a leaner and more chiseled machine. This is further helped by an all-new front fascia that now boasts a larger main grille with chrome, pulled-back projector headlamps, and a completely revised hood and front bumper. The curvy sides of the Traverse now look streamlined and feature squared wheel arches, beefier body cladding, and a more defined shoulder line.
Even the design of the C-pillar is new, where we now find a wrap-around style rear glass area. Speaking of which, the rear of the new Chevrolet Traverse sports is flatter yet looks more muscular than earlier. The design is complemented by a thick chrome bar in the center, flanked by sleek tail lamps on either side. Further down, the rear bumper can be had with stylish, chrome-tipped dual exhaust pipes plus another bar of chrome right below the tailgate. Better still, the ‘kick’ activated tailgate reveals a capacious 651-liter boot.
Some of the new Chevrolet Traverse’s other physical attributes include a width of 1,996mm, a height of 1,795mm, and a full body length of 5,189mm. As for color options in the UAE, the new Traverse can be had in Iridescent Pearl Tricoat, Satin Steel Gray Metallic, Summit White, Silver Ice Metallic, Mosaic Black Metallic, Graphite Metallic, Black Cherry Metallic, or Cajun Red Tintcoat. For an everyday midsize SUV, the latest avatar of the Chevrolet Traverse is a decent-looking option.
Interior
The cabin of the new Chevrolet Traverse feels spacious and well laid-out, especially if you go for the 7-seater version with the captain seats in the middle. The leather-clad seats look nice and are big enough even for those with larger frames. And despite being fitted with two sunroofs, headroom is more than sufficient, while kneeroom is good too. For those seated right at the back, legroom will be a little tight, but since Chevy has scooped out a part of the ceiling, headroom is more than adequate.
Depending on the trim level you pick, the interior can either be an all-black affair or come finished in a dual-tone brown-black scheme. There is also stitched leatherette on the dashboard, door pads, seats and armrests to further improve the in-cabin experience. However, as with some of GM’s/Chevy’s products, plastics in the interior of the new Traverse are not exactly of the highest quality. Still, the various buttons and controls are easy to use and the driver’s dials are simple, with regular analogue dials for the speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge and engine coolant temperature. That said, the Traverse does get a center digital color screen for displaying the vehicle’s several functions and information, all controlled by buttons on the steering wheel.
Chevrolet has equipped the new Traverse with many unique and exciting features. The ones that might stand out for you include items such as a 10-speaker premium audio system by Bose, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with wide angle camera mode, ventilated & heated front seats with memory setting, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment head unit with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, a wireless charging pad, tri-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry with push-button ignition, an electronic parking brake, power-folding third-row seats, and shiny 20-inch aluminium alloy wheels. Of course, most of this tech can only be seen in the range-topping variants of the Traverse.
Performance and other features
In the United Arab Emirates, the new Chevrolet Traverse comes powered with a 3.6-liter naturally-aspirated six-cylinder petrol engine that produces 310hp and 361Nm of torque. This engine can power either the front wheels or all fours, but the transmission in both remains a 9-speed unit. While the all-wheel-drive variant of the new Traverse weighs nearly 2 tons, it can still make it to 100 kmph in well under 8 seconds. Meanwhile, the top whack of this SUV is just a smidge under 210 kmph. As far as fuel economy is concerned, the Chevrolet Traverse averages 11.9 kmpl or 8.4 L/100 km (FWD) and 11.1 kmpl or 9 L/100 km (AWD).
The new Chevrolet Traverse comes fitted with many passive and active safety features to keep its occupants away from harm’s reach. There is adaptive cruise control with automatic stop & go function, Following Distance Indicator, Front Pedestrian Detection with Front Automatic Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, all-around parking sensors, Surround Vision Camera, Rear seat reminder, electronic stability & traction control systems, multiple airbags, and an advanced twin-clutch all-wheel-drive system.

Nissan Pathfinder
The Pathfinder is one of the longest-running models in Nissan’s model portfolio, having been around since 1985. Over the next 35 years or so, the SUV went through several cycles of updates and new model releases, gaining more popularity and wider market reach as it went on. After a long (enough) lull, in early 2021, Nissan finally unveiled the all-new fifth-generation Pathfinder. Built on the same platform as the latest Infiniti QX60, the all-new Pathfinder sports multiple technological, safety and comfort upgrades over its predecessor.
While it has already on sale in several international markets (USA, for example), its UAE sales date is just around the corner (at the time of writing). However, while the actual prices are not yet available, it is being predicated that Nissan will price the new Pathfinder a touch higher than the model it replaces – starting somewhere around AED 130,000 (approximately). Given the additional kit on offer, a price hike certainly makes sense. On the other hand, if you are on the search for something right away and for less money, then there are plenty of certified used Nissan cars for sale in Sharjah on Cars24.
Exterior
Nissan has completely overhauled the exterior design o the all-new Pathfinder, shedding its rounded shape for a bolder and more energetic silhouette. The rugged and sharp-looking front end features the brand’s famous (and large) V-motion three-slotted grille, new C-shaped LED headlamps with slim LED DRLs, and a deep front bumper with sharp contours plus a faux skid plate. This is a pretty neat-looking front fascia – certainly catches one’s attention.
Along the sides, Nissan has given the all-new Pathfinder contrasting dual-tone paint, U-shaped wheel arches with new diamond-cut alloy rims, protruding front & rear haunches, and a sloping roof with the industry’s favorite ‘floating’ effect. Similarly, the rear of the all-new Pathfinder has no similarities with the outgoing model, with Nissan having updated almost every panel and detail. There is a massive “Pathfinder” branding, along with a stylish wrap-around rear glass facade, a sporty rear spoiler, stylish tail lamps with LED running lights, and a silver bumper guard which also acts as a pseudo skid plate.
There is no getting away from the fact that this all-new Nissan Pathfinder sure looks good, at least for a regular family SUV. In all, there are 15 different exterior colors available for the all-new Pathfinder – most (if not all) will make their way to the UAE as well. Moreover, customers will be able to choose from either 10 mono-tone shades or 5 dual-tone options. When it comes to its actual physical size, the all-new Nissan Pathfinder measures 5,022mm in length, 1,979mm in width, 1,796mm in height, and has a total wheelbase of 2,901mm. Nissan has also made more space in the back for luggage, with the boot capacity now coming in at 470 liters behind the last row. If you weren’t too sure about the previous model’s design, this new one is certainly a welcome change.
Interior
The previous generation of the Pathfinder had a spacious and fairly comfortable interior, with the general fit & finish being quite decent overall. And by the looks of things, it seems like Nissan has made improvements on all these counts – this cabin has gone more upscale. What is also great is that the carmaker has updated the technology and features list as well, which is always a pleasant news. Then again, since this new model will be pricier than the one it replaces, so it makes sense that it comes loaded with more bells & whistles.
As before, the Pathfinder comes with three rows (with up to 8 seats). However, Nissan seems to have found even more space in each row. This will come as great news for those that like to take their families and friends on weekend trips. Furthermore, the marque has improved on the overall insulation, thereby ensuring a more pleasant ride. All rows have their own cupholders and air vents, along with speakers and ISOFIX anchor points. Similarly, the all-new Pathfinder’s interior does well when it comes its build quality – of course, this is no Infiniti, but it is still impressive.
The cabin of the new Pathfinder is not just a practical and upmarket-looking place to be in, it is also packing some modern and useful features. Among the highlights to keep an eye on are niceties like a panoramic sunroof, quilted leather seats, three-zone automatic climate control, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, a 9-inch touch-infotainment screen with wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, a premium Bose sound system with 13 speakers, and split-folding rear seats.
Performance and other features
Adding on to the new Pathfinder’s extensive equipment list is Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 and ProPilot Assist. These systems bring onboard features like High Beam Assist, Intelligent Cruise Control, Intelligent Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention, Intelligent Lane Intervention, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. There is also a head-up display, along with multiple airbags, stability & traction control, Hill Start Assist, and a surround-view camera system.
Under the hood of the Nissan Pathfinder is the same 3.5-liter V6 engine that develops 271hp and 340Nm of peak torque as in the old model. All of this now goes through a new 9-speed automatic gearbox (instead of the old CVT), ending up either at the front wheels or at all fours (in the AWD variant). The latter does 0 to 100 kmph in under 8 seconds, while maxing out at around 195 kmph. The new Nissan Pathfinder (AWD) will likely average around 9.5 kmpl or 10.5 L/100 km.

Lexus RX
The Lexus RX is one of the best-selling luxury SUVs in the world, and it is irrefutably the Japanese brand’s chart buster in the segment. Released to the world for the first time back in the late-1990s, the RX has been a leader in the world of luxury automobiles (SUV or not). Today, the Lexus RX has forged its place like barely any other, giving birth four generations of class-leading vehicles in their own right. In its current iteration, the Lexus RX is based on parent company Toyota’s K platform.
The Lexus RX has been doing exceedingly well in the region for a long time, and with this current avatar, the Japanese luxury brand is looking to extend the nameplate’s lifespan. And guess what? I am pretty certain that this marque will last for a long time to come. Even though the latest model came out in 2015, it looks just as modern as it was released yesterday. Cars24 has had several options in the market – whether you are looking for used cars in Umm Al Quwain or second-hand cars in Abu Dhabi, Cars24 has you covered. As for a brand-new Lexus RX in the UAE, prices start from AED 245,000.
Exterior
The sleek and mean-looking front fascia of the RX boasts the brand’s illustrious and large “spindle’ grille, paired with spectacular tri-beam LED headlights, suave LED DRLs, and a contoured bumper with horizontally-oriented LED fog lamps. The sides of the RX look sleek yet boast some typical SUV traits such as a confident stance along with flared fenders and strong body panel contouring. Of course, the large 20-inch aluminium alloy wheels surely add to this crossover’s overall appearance and style.
The RX also sports a floating-style roof design, which bestows a contemporary to this SUV. When combined with its swooping character lines, LED tail lamps with L-shaped running elements, a steeply raked rear windscreen and a roof spoiler, the Lexus RX can catch your attention. Furthermore, there is also faux skid plate and dual exhaust tips at the back for further amplification of this car’s sporty ambitions. If you prefer a luxury SUV with a certain flair and funky styling cues and isn’t all that large, then the Lexus RX is certainly up your alley.
While it may not be too big, the Lexus RX is far from being a small urban runabout. It comes in at 4,890mm in length, 1,895mm in width, and 1,690mm in height. The RX’s wheelbase stretches to 2,789mm, while its minimum boot volume stands at 453 liters. In the UAE, the Lexus RX is offered in over half-a-dozen colors, including Sonic Titanium, Terrane Khaki M.M., White, Blue, and Black. Even though the outgoing model made its debut in 2015, it still looks new and exciting, especially following its recent facelift.
Interior
The interior of the Lexus RX is a display of quality and luxury, as it should be. Being a Lexus, you will never have to complain about fit & finish or the panels rattling in a few years post purchase. Moreover, the quality of leather used in the RX is better than even that found in some comparable German luxury cars. The seats are well-suited for long road trips, while there is enough lumbar and under-thigh support on offer. Plus, when you consider that this is only a 5-seater and there is a massive panoramic sunroof, this cabin usually feels airy enough.
On the other hand, while many latest luxury cars come fitted with full digital driver’s screen with customizable menus and displays, the Lexus RX lacks that feature. Its center console, while easy to understand and operate, looks pretty old-school due to its generic buttons and dials layout. Then there is premium wood veneer and stitched leather, which uplifts the whole ambience, while a high-definition 12.3-inch infotainment display comes standard and gets Android Auto & Apple CarPlay. The RX also boasts a high-fidelity Mark Levinson audio system with 15 speakers, and it sounds really good with little to no distortion.
The Lexus RX’s other notable features include a wireless smartphone charger, remote engine start, rear-seat entertainment system with wireless headphones, power adjustable & ventilated front seats, and a kick-activated powered tailgate. While some German rivals provide more in the way of latest technology, few can match top-notch cabin feel and comfort level of the Lexus RX.
Performance and other features
Powering the Lexus RX is a 3.5-liter V6 petrol engine that makes 296hp along with 370Nm of torque. It is mated to a torque-converter 8-speed automatic gearbox that sends the engine’s power to all four wheels. Under the right conditions, the RX can go from naught to 100 kmph in 7.6 seconds, which isn’t too bad. As for its top speed, this Lexus should be able to clock around 200 kmph, while its average fuel consumption is rated at approximately 9.3 kmpl or 10.7 L/100 km.
Taking a look at its safety features, the Lexus RX comes equipped with cruise control, Pre-Crash Safety System with Collision Avoidance System, Automatic High Beam, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Keeping Assist, Panoramic View Monitor, Head-Up Display, Vehicle Stability Control with traction Control System, and a bunch of airbags as well. Yes, the Lexus RX is both comfortable and safe.

Mercedes-Benz GLE
Markets like the UAE are well-known for their midsize luxury SUVs. These cars have long been some of the best sellers for their respective companies, with German brands being of particular interest to most buyers. And one cannot spell “German luxury SUV” without mentioning Mercedes-Benz and its GLE. In production since the late-1990s, the Mercedes-Benz GLE is one of the most prevalent and premier representation of this genre of cars. In its latest fourth-generation avatar (introduced in 2018), the GLE brings favorable additions and design tweaks to the play.
With several trim levels on offer, one can expect to pay anywhere in the neighborhood of around AED 375,000 for a brand-new example from one of the many official dealerships in the emirates. Obviously, this being a posh German marque, customers can end up paying even more on optional extras and/or variant upgrades. However, if that amount sounds a little lofty to you, fret not, as Cars24 has many certified second-hand cars for sale in Dubai (and other major emirates) for much less money.
Exterior
The new Mercedes-Benz GLE sure is a striking-looking SUV, especially when viewed from the front or rear. For instance, the front features the German brand’s latest grille design with its twin-bar pattern (or a sparkling diamond pattern) that meets up with a large three-pointed star in the middle. Furthermore, there are the gorgeous Multibeam LED headlamps that also get angular LED DRLs, while the large and sculpted front bumper and hood adds to the muscular yet elegant proportions of the GLE. The strong and athletic sides of the SUV look just as energetic, with large alloy rims, extended wheel arches, vivid body lines, and fixed running boards.
The rear of the new Mercedes-Benz GLE gets full LED tail lamps that are both svelte and highly technological in their design and execution. These are complemented by a well-integrated roof spoiler, chrome detailing on the tailgate, a sculpted but tough-looking bumper with faux vents on the sides and twin exhausts tips at the bottom. While some cars become less special over time, the GLE has gone from good to better over the last few years – its design is quite something. Its rough and tough look is amalgamated into an aesthetically pleasing and sporty form that few SUVs in its class can match.
In the UAE, Mercedes-Benz offers the new GLE with up to 10 exterior colors that include Polar White, Emerald Green, Mojave Silver, Obsidian Black Metallic, Hyacinth Red Metallic, Selenite Grey, and Cavansite Blue among others. The GLE has respectable presence on the road, despite being a midsize SUV. This shows in its exterior dimensions of 4,924mm in overall length, 2,022mm in width, 1,797mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,995mm. At the same time, the 630-liter boot of the GLE can easily swallow up many large bags without any issues.
Interior
Compared to the old model, the new GLE is miles ahead in terms of its interior design and overall cabin feel. Mercedes-Benz has completely revamped this interior, akin to its other latest models, as the GLE’s cabin now promises a contemporary and thoroughly luxurious experience. Much of what you see and touch feel well-built and expensive, with two large HD screens taking up much of the real estate up front. The large grab handles in the center console, along with the metal switches and trim around the air vents, look neat and upscale as well.
However, while most of the materials and much of the fit-and-finish look nice, the quality of the actual finished product isn’t the best of the best. Still, when pitted against its previous iterations, the outgoing GLE’s interior is the best the model has witnessed so far. Making the experience better and adding to the rich feel of this cabin is the large dual-pane sunroof and 64-color LED ambient lighting – trust me, you will want these. The leather seats are plenty supportive and also offer a good deal of comfort even if you are on the larger side, while the windows are big enough to ensure the interior feels spacious and airy.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE comes with many standard equipment, though you may very well want (or need) to tick those option boxes if you actually want to ‘feel’ rich. Some of the items that the new GLE can get include adaptive dampers with active body control, adaptive cruise control, a hands-free tailgate, acoustic windows, soft-closing doors, climate-controlled & powered front seats with memory, heated & cooled cupholders, rear entertainment screens, a high-end Burmester 3D surround-sound system, and Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX infotainment system with the virtual assistant. Needless to say, you can add tons of goodies over and above these.
Performance and other features
Similarly, the new Mercedes-Benz GLE comes loaded with many safety nannies. There are more than enough airbags, plus various electronics such as stability program and traction control system. Moreover, the GLE can also be had with a head-up display, Traffic Sign Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Magic Vision Control, Collision Detection with Active Brake Assist, and Active Parking Assist with 360-degree cameras.
The new Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six petrol engine which is also assisted by a 22hp electric motor (EQ Boost, as Mercedes calls it) and a 9-speed automatic transmission. With 367hp and 500Nm on tap, the 2.1-ton GLE 450 will accelerate to 100 kmph in 5.7 seconds and touch a top whack of 250 kmph. According to tests, the GLE 450 4MATIC will return 10.6 kmpl or 9.4 L/100 km, and in the UAE, comes with all-wheel drive as standard.

BMW X5
The BMW X5 was the niche German carmaker’s first SUV model when it made its debut back in 1999. This means that the X5 has been around for over 20 years, all the while being improved upon by a brand known to make some of the most popular luxury vehicles in the world. Currently in its fourth generation, the latest avatar of the X5 is built on BMW’s new Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform and was unveiled in 2018 to be the nameplate’s avantgarde member.
The X5 competes against other segment favorites such as the Mercedes-Benz GLE and the Range Rover Sport. Among the several variants on offer in the UAE, the 40i xDrive is perhaps the most popular among those looking for a BMW X5. This variant can quite easily set you back by around AED 400,000 (thanks to some options), so it is definitely not a cheap buy. Fortunately, you can search for lower priced yet certified used cars in Fujairah (or any other emirate) on Cars24.
Exterior
Over its lifetime, BMW has kept modernizing the X5 to keep it as competitive as possible. While the switch from the previous third-gen to the current fourth-gen model isn’t as drastic in its silhouette as the earlier ones, it is still very significant. The front end is now all new and has been redesigned to look more aggressive and sportier than before, along with integrating an even larger kidney grille as with other newer BMW models. Other changes come in the form of reshaped and more stylish LED headlamps and a revised front bumper with bigger intakes.
BMW has made this generation of the X5 slightly longer and wider than the old one, but the side profile is more or less identical to the previous-gen X5. Having said that, the new X5 stands more upright, while the short overhangs coupled with the flared fenders and swanky M-light alloy wheels really creates a sporty aura around this SUV. Also, the rear gets new and sleeker LED tail lamps along with a revised bumper. Thankfully, the new BMW X5 features a split tailgate, which is quite handy.
Speaking of which, the X5’s boot capacity stands at a respectable 645 liters. The BMW X5 measures 4,922mm in length, 2,004mm in width, 1,745mm in height, and the distance between the wheels is 2,975mm. In the UAE, customers can pick from colors like Black Sapphire Metallic, Mineral White Metallic, Arctic Grey Brilliant, and Tanzanite Blue Metallic to name a few. The new BMW X5 sure is an eye-catching piece of modern design.
Interior
The driver-orientated cockpit of the new BMW X5 elevates the driving experience like few cars can in this segment. Of course, while you don’t sit as high as in a Range Rover or even BMW’s own X7, the seating position is pretty much spot on. The luxury and comfort factor are high, while the level of build and fit-and-finish found in the X5’s cabin is significantly better than that found in even other niche British or German marques. BMW really has its quality control division game on point.
Moreover, the design of this interior is quite elegant and modern, though perhaps not as soothing and tranquil to the eye as that in the new GLE. In its 5-seater format, the BMW X5 offers plenty of space for 5 adults and a rich blend of airiness and a cocoon-like safety feel. Contributing to the contemporary in-cabin experience of the new X5 are features like a digital instrument cluster, the new BMW Operating System with the latest Intelligent Personal Assistant, a crisp touchscreen infotainment display with support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a panoramic sunroof with integrated LEDs. And just like in the Mercedes-Benz, you can load up the BMW X5 with tons of optional goodies.
Performance and other features
As expected, the new BMW X5 comes packed with all the latest in passive and active safety features, which includes a plethora of airbags, electronic stability & traction control, an intelligent all-wheel-drive system, adaptive Laser headlights, radar-guided cruise control, plus pedestrian detection with auto-emergency braking among others.
In case of the BMW X5 40i xDrive, it is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six engine that generates 340hp and 450Nm of torque. An 8-speed automatic gearbox is used to channel the power to all four wheels, enabling the X5 to hit 100 kmph in just 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 243 kmph. You can also expect a combined fuel economy of about 11.3 kmpl or 8.8 L/100 km.

Conclusion
The UAE clearly has no shortage of great midsize SUVs, with plenty more expected to come in the next few years. Whether you want a spacious yet affordable family wagon or an all-out luxury 5-seater with the latest tech, the SUVs on this list are definitely worth taking a close look at.
