Before SUVs and crossovers could get to where they are today, the automotive landscape had quite a lot of station wagons. Most of these practical family cars were primarily found in the western hemisphere, in places such as the United States and Europe. However, there were quite a few examples roaming around in the streets of the former Soviet Union and a select few Asian countries as well. Today, station wagons are nowhere near as popular or abundant as they once used to be. Some of the few markets that still prefer the station wagon include Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and a few nations in the Middle East.

In the latter region of the world, there aren’t a whole lot of car buyers that prefer a station wagon over a sedan or crossover. Having said that, even though there are only a select few prospective customers, some companies do retail station wagons in places such as the United Arab Emirates. It is no surprise that countries such as the United Arab Emirates have only a few station wagons on sale in the current day and age. For the most part, car buyers in this part of the world are either looking for an affordable yet dependable vehicle, or have the means necessary to purchase something niche and expensive. This means that, on most occasions, auto companies will dispatch models that they know will sell out quickly rather than just sitting pretty on the showroom floor.

Meanwhile, station wagons have held a major role in many nations and even within the automotive industry. In fact, there have been station wagons from various carmakers that include General Motors, Ford, Buick, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Citroen, Peugeot, Renault, Toyota, and Volvo in the past few decades. However, while some of these are no longer around, others are only sold in regions where there is still a demand for the type.

The Middle East also has had its fair share of station wagons being sold over the years. Unfortunately, for those who love this type of a vehicle, their presence has been on the decline. Much of this can be attributed to the exploding demand of crossovers and SUVs, but shifting patterns in the region has made station wagons rarer than some supercars. At present, there are only three station wagons that are on sale in the UAE – as is visible in the table above. Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback is likely the most affordable and practical station wagon on sale in the UAE right now. With a price tag of around 110,000 dirhams, the Outback not only comes across as a logical buying decision, but its long history and list of everyday capabilities makes it a sure-shot candidate for a test drive (at the least). The model has been around since the early-1990s. In the UAE, Al Khoory Automobiles is the company that handles sales and services of all Subaru vehicles.

While you could get a new Subaru Outback for less dough, there are several more (and even cheaper) old cars for sale in Dubai on Cars24. Similarly, there are plenty of second-hand cars for sale in Abu Dhabi as well. As for the Subaru Outback, this region of the world still has the older fifth-generation iteration – it is still a pretty good car. In terms of its exterior dimensions, the Outback measures in at 4,820mm in length, 1,840mm in width, and has an overall height of 1,605mm.

Meanwhile, the Subaru Outback features a wheelbase length of 2,745mm and a maximum boot capacity of 1,801 liters (with the rear bench folded). The latter might even lead some to believe that this is a crossover SUV, which the Outback is categorically not. As I mentioned earlier, the Subaru Outback is built to serve those who value practicality and everyday usability over just a flashy projection of unnecessary design flair. This does imply that the interior of the Outback (especially the fifth-gen model) will feel bland and emotionally lackluster to some. On the other hand, the design of the seats will not leave you fuming on accounts of a bad back or require a visit to a chiropractor. The rear seats are comfortable too, while there’s enough room for most people to fit sans much compromise.

Subaru has also made enough room for you to store your personables, whilst the dual-tone beige/black theme along with the blue ambient lighting makes this cabin feel quite airy and spacious. The Outback’s interior feels well put-together and durable, though there are cheap plastics in here (as is understandable with an older model). The Subaru Outback also comes equipped with safety features such as all-around parking sensors with surround-view cameras, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, Vehicle Dynamics Control System, Active Torque Vectoring, Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection, High Beam Assist, and up to 6 airbags. IN the UAE, the Subaru Outback is available with two petrol engines – there is a 2.5-liter horizontally-opposed four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter six-cylinder. The four-banger produces 173hp and 235Nm of torque, while the V6 puts out 256hp and 350Nm of peak torque. Both come with all-wheel drive (AWD) and a CVT gearbox.

Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo

After the launch of the original Taycan back in 2019, Porsche soon followed that up with the Taycan Cross Turismo. In essence, this is like the station wagon version of the much-praised Taycan EV. Obviously, this being an all-new performance EV from a niche brand like Porsche, the Taycan Cross Turismo is anything but cheap – it starts at just over 413,000 dirhams in the UAE. There are quite a few Porsche dealerships in the country, including Al Nabooda Automobiles in Dubai.

Thankfully, if you are looking to buy used cars in Sharjah or certified pre-owned cars in Ras Al Khaimah, Cars24 has enough stock to satisfy most buyers. The Taycan Cross Turismo, as the name might suggest, is based on the standard Taycan. However, its exterior dimensions are a little different to the latter, mainly because this is a station wagon. The Taycan Cross Turismo comes in at 4,974mm in length, 1,967mm in width, and 1,409mm in overall height at the roof. In the meantime, the Taycan Cross Turismo’s wheelbase stretches to 2,904mm, while its maximum boot capacity is 1,171 liters (with the rear seats folded away).

In the UAE, the Taycan Cross Turismo is offered in 17 standard exterior colors. This includes Carrara White Metallic, Jet Black Metallic, Volcano Grey Metallic, Cherry Metallic, Gentian Blue Metallic, Mamba Green Metallic, Carmine Red etc. There is no doubt, the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo looks far sportier and more exciting than the Outback (no offense, Subaru). Then again, this design may not be for everyone – you may very well prefer the cleaner and sleeker look of the standard Taycan.

As for the Taycan Cross Turismo, the front fascia boasts Matrix LED headlights with Porsche’s distinctive four-point LED DRLs, underlined by side air intakes, and a pointy nose with a front wing plus a wide lower intake. The low but stretched-out silhouette of the Taycan Cross Turismo puts forth a sporty and active persona for sure. This look is complemented by the large yet aerodynamically-designed 20-inch alloy wheels, colored brake calipers, sporty side skirts, flared haunches, and front-fender-integrated air curtains.

The rear of the Taycan Cross Turismo involves a functional roof spoiler, a rather narrow rear window with a tiny wiper, Porsche’s magnificent full-width LED light bar with sleek LED taillights, and a muscular-looking bumper with an air diffuser and plastic cladding. As expected, the interior of the Taycan Cross Turismo not only looks sporty and upscale, but it also boasts impeccable quality and technology. The leather-clad multifunction steering wheel sits directly in front of a curved yet functional and high-definition 16.8-inch digital instrument pod.

There are two more screen in this cockpit, including the 10.9-inch infotainment head unit and an 8.4-inch touch panel for handling other vehicle functionalities. The leather seats look really nice and sporty, but are quite accommodating and supportive. The Taycan Cross Turismo is mainly built as a four-person wagon, though the rear can seat three people. Moreover, while there is enough room for your knees and legs, the sloping roof and relatively small rear windows might make you feel a touch hemmed-in. On a side note, the level of cabin insulation is pretty good, albeit a little bit of tire roar does make its way at higher speeds or over rougher patches of road.

Meanwhile, the Taycan Cross Turismo’s safety nannies include 8 airbags, ISOFIX anchors, Active Lane Keep Assist with Swerve Assist & Intersection Assist, Porsche Stability Management, Porsche Traction Management, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake, and many more advanced safety features.

The entry-level Porsche Taycan 4 Cross Turismo comes with a 93.4 kWh battery and up to 390 km of maximum range. Its twin electric motors (one on each axle) power all four wheels and produce 476hp plus 500Nm of torque. This is enough to juice to go from 0 to 100 kmph in 5.1 seconds and hit a top whack of 220 kmph. Audi RS6 Avant

In the world of station wagons, the venerable Audi RS6 Avant stands head and shoulders above most of its competition. Does this mean that this is the best station wagon ever made in all of human history? Well, that really depends on whom you ask. However, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the RS6 Avant is genuinely one of the best station wagons in the UAE. Speaking of which, a new RS6 Avant costs around 600,000 dirhams and is available from Ali & Sons in Abu Dhabi or Al Nabooda Automobiles in Dubai.

Of course, it will be completely alright if your budget for a car is slightly less than over half-a-million dirhams. In that case, you should check out Cars24, as it has an extensively list of certified cars in Fujairah and old cars in Ajman. The outgoing Audi RS6 Avant was updated in 2019 and is based on the German marque’s MLB EVO platform. Ever since it received its facelift, the RS6 Avant not only looks more aggressive and sportier, but it also has this enviable posh air about it.

The razor-sharp front of the new Audi RS6 Avant gets the brand’s fantastically-enigmatic hexagonal and all-black grille. There is enough room in the back to seat two adults in comfort, though the large center tunnel means that the middle occupant will not feel all that welcome. Still, the quality of materials is just as good in the back of the RS6 Avant as in the front. As for its equipment list, this Audi station wagon comes with radar-guided cruise control, RS sport suspension with Dynamic Ride Control, RS-specific customizable drive modes, a head-up display, power-operated and ventilated front seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, a 10.1-inch touch-infotainment head unit with smartphone connectivity, an 8.6-inch touch-enabled lower screen, a 12.3-inch Audi Virtual Cockpit display, aluminium shift paddles, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and many more up-to-date features.

Conclusion

With practically only three options to choose from, the United Arab Emirates does not have a vast collection of station wagons. However, that means that the handful that do exist, are kind of a special deal. You are more likely to come across Lambos and Ferraris than you are of seeing a station wagon in the flesh. I mean, with just three options, what do you really expect?

Of course, none of this means that these station wagons are the best in the business or will be best for you. On the other hand, if you are looking for a spacious, practical, and well-priced family transport with a good equipment list and proven mechanicals, then the Subaru Outback is hard to ignore. While it is relatively old, the Outback comes with well thought-out engineering, a sorted cabin, and more than enough modern features.

However, if you have more cash to splurge, then options like the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo and Audi RS6 Avant become quite enticing. Not only are these some of the best-engineered performance cars on the planet, but these station wagons are also more than capable of beating many sports cars when it comes to performance. In this case, you could say that you can bake your own cake and eat it too. AT the end of the day, with just three new players, choosing a new station wagon in the UAE isn’t going to be all that difficult.
