There’s nothing better than a road trip. Wind in your hair, friends in the back, and the music  blasting. However, all of your planning will be wasted if your car decides to break down in the  middle of nowhere. Being stranded thousands of miles from home can certainly put a damper  on your road trip. A little preparedness goes a long way. Here are a few car care tips and  essentials you need to make your trip a guaranteed success.

1. Carry a roadside survival kit

Prepare for the worst-case scenario. If your car breaks down somewhere assistance  isn’t available, a simple kit with essentials should help you out. Keep a spare tire and a  tire patch kit in the back of your car. If you’re moderately familiar with car repair carry  screwdrivers, pliers, and other tools you may need. Additionally, a flashlight, medical kit,  rechargeable power bank should come in handy in an emergency.

2. Replenish your fluid levels

In addition to your regular maintenance, before you go on a long haul trip it’s essential to  check if your fluid levels are full. This will ensure you have a smooth drive and back.  Important fluids levels to check include coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and of  course oil. If your car has power steering, check fluid levels for that as well.

3. Perform simple at-home safety checks

You can do a few simple safety checks at home before you start your trip. Check if any  dashboard warning lights are going off. If they are, it’s a good idea to bring the car into  the shop. If your breaks are squealing when you drive the fluid levels might be low.  Visually inspect your tires for signs of wear and make sure air pressure is optimal.

4. Check your battery

You don’t need your battery giving out in the middle of the highway or somewhere a tow  truck can’t reach you. The average battery life is approximately 3 years. If your battery is  on its last leg it is advisable to get it replaced. Better be safe than sorry.

5. Clean out your car!

Clean out and vacuum your seats, floor mats, storage areas. Make sure your trunk is  cleared out to store luggage properly. You’re going to be stuck inside the car for a while,  so make sure it’s pleasant and clean!

Your car is our constant companion on a road trip, so it’s important to take care of it. A few  simple checks and a little preparation can help you enjoy your vacation, carefree.
